Immediate Volunteer Needs
Charles E. Smith Life Communities is always looking for volunteers to support projects and programs. Those who serve 100 hours or more per year are recognized in our annual report and at the annual volunteer appreciation event.

Charles E. Smith Life Communities offers a variety of volunteer opportunities - on weekends and weekdays. Below is a brief summary of current opportunities.
Friendly Visitor Program: Volunteers are invited to visit with residents. Volunteers are assigned to a unit/building and visit, rea and interact with residents. This is ideal for those who don’t have a set schedule of when they would like to volunteer as the hours are flexible.
Resident Escort Program: Escort residents to and from activities. Our recreation therapy department provides a variety of activities throughout the day for residents. Assistance is often needed escorting residents to these programs – whether on the individual units, social hall or outside. Volunteers are needed to push wheelchairs and are often asked to stay at the program to assist.
Weather permitting, escort residents outside to enjoy the day and stay with them. Escorting involves including pushing wheelchairs and may also include spending time talking with residents.
We have a beauty shop on campus and residents can make appointments at their convenience. Assistance is needed escorting resident to beauty shop and escorting residents back to their rooms or to programs after their appointments.
Recreation Therapy Team Program: Our recreation therapy team organizes many activities throughout the day. Therapists often need assistance.
- Art therapy – assistance is often needed by our art therapist
- Exercise programs – assist in general recreation therapy programs
- Card/board/word and other games. Visit with a resident and play a board game.
Performers - If you play a musical instrument, sing, dance or would like to perform a play, we would be delighted to have you work with our recreation therapy team to determine a date that works for you.
Assist on a trip -Provide assistance on shopping or cultural activity trips. Trips are planned throughout the year through our recreation therapy department. Often, volunteers are needed to help transport residents by pushing wheelchairs and going on the bus with the residents. (Volunteers may not drive residents in their cars).
Internships with the Rehabilitation team (limited number available)
Students in rehabilitation programs can assist in the Dekelboum Therapy Suite. Limited opportunities are available and those interested should indicate this on their volunteer application.
Dining Room Assistance: Provide dining room assistance— Escorts residents to dining room; return residents to the nursing station. This is available at specific times only.
Manicurist: Provide manicures and hand massages to residents. Recreation Therapy will provide the supplies (files, polish, and lotion). Volunteers may not cut nails or cuticles and must wear gloves during this activity.
Translation Assistance: Do you speak another language? We often have the need for translation for residents.
Pastoral Care Program: Escort residents to and from religious services. Services take place twice a day, Monday – Friday, at 9:30am and again at 3:30pm. Volunteers are also needed Saturday morning from 8:45am – 11:30am. Volunteers are also needed to help residents hold the service books, and turn pages.
Gardeners Program: Provide resident assistance with gardening. We have several garden areas available on campus and assistance is often needed. This is seasonal and as needed only.
Adopt a Grandparent Program: Volunteers will be assigned a resident and will be expected to visit on a regular basis to visit, talk, read, play games.
Revitz House Volunteer Program: Assist with special evening activities. Revitz House will occasionally have a need for volunteers to assist at special evening programs. Volunteer duties include set up, clean up, providing refreshments.
Holiday Volunteers Program: Volunteers are needed on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Christmas, Easter and Passover. If you are interested, please let us know which holidays you are available. We will contact you in advance with schedule information and more details.
Patient Services Representative: Greet and welcome new residents and administer a brief survey. These surveys help us understand the needs of the residents and how we can improve. Please note that there is specific training for this program and use of an IPAD (which is provided) is required.
Administrative Assistance – various departments will, at times, have a need for administrative help.
