Charles E. Smith Life Communities (CESLC) continued its partnership with the National Institutes of Health and its National Institutes of Health Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship this summer. The NIH fellowship is a year-long commitment for doctors who have career interests in hospice and palliative medicine. During the fellowship, fellows spend half the year at the NIH Clinical Center, and the rest of the year is spent in rotation at various medical settings.

Dr. Kyle Powers, our latest fellow, spent four weeks learning and working alongside the medical team at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. “There comes a time when you have an opportunity to help improve someone’s quality of life,” Powers said. “This experience allowed me to assist with this part of someone’s journey.”

Powers also got to participate in the person- centered care which is integral to what we do at CESLC. Throughout his time here, Powers worked with a multi-disciplinary team, comprised of physicians, nurses, a chaplain, and a social worker, among others. They met once a week to fine-tune the individualized plans for each patient. This is one of the aspects of this specialty that Powers appreciates--there is no “base algorithm” that can be used to determine a course of treatment--each patient is an individual and treated as such.
