Campus Residents Shine in Jewish Community Center's Annual Art Exhibition

Drop by any art class on our campus and you'll observe, amid bustle and chatter, older adults are having a ball.

Thanks to the Bender JCC of Greater Washington, residents who love to create art will strut their stuff along with other area seniors similarly inspired at the Center's annual art show focused exclusively on what folks, ages 65 and up, have accomplished - as non-professional artists. It's titled A Lifetime of Perspective, and according to Program's Coordinator Kandy Hutman, visitors will be treated to a stunning array of prints, paintings, drawings, sculptures, jewelry, photography, wood and metal work, fabric art, and fine crafts.

This year [2014], the youngest participating artist is 65, the eldest 99—and that eldest person happens to be an exceptionally spry resident of Revitz House, Edith Bloom, above.

For Edith, art became a reawakened passion in the Revitz art program. She immigrated to the U.S. from Poland in 1935, married, and raised a family in Hartford, Connecticut. Drawn to the art world as a young student, she somehow never found time to cultivate her talents until 2004, when she moved to Revitz. Today, many of her detailed acrylic paintings — mostly of landscapes or objects found in nature — adorn the walls of her apartment and her family's homes.
We congratulate all of CESLC's artists!

"I love the whole process and the joy of the opening reception when the grandchildren and children are the ones who get to say what a great job their loved ones have done. There are few things more moving than seeing them honor their grandparents and parents rather than the other way around."

~ Kandy Hutman, Program Coordinator, Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, 2014
