2017 Knitters

Sparked by Tikkun Olam

Beth El Knitters 2017"How long does it take to knit a pair of booties?" That question was posed to Sarah Kalser, left, and Heather Janssen of Beth El Congregation, who delivered to the Hebrew Home 45 snuggly items—hats, mittens, scarves, booties—all expertly knitted by them and fellow congregants for Hebrew Home residents. "About 10 to 12 hours for the booties, more for some of the other pieces," they answered.

Beth El's participants in this knitting project are long-time members of two of the synagogue's many active2017 Knitting Donation groups, the Senior Caucus and Zhava, "a part of Sisterhood focused on social, social action, educational, and religious programs." All avid and talented knitters, they were deeply motivated by the concept of tikkun olam, repairing the world, to assist older adults in a substantive way. It should be noted that Beth El, as a congregation, is committed to providing its members with numerous and diverse opportunities to perform acts of loving kindness (gemilut chasadim).

"One of the best things about working at CESLC/Hebrew Home is that we are part of a larger community of incredibly generous people," said Director of Social Work Lori Saffitz, seated right, who along with Director of Recreation Therapy Russell Rogers, standing, welcomed the donors at the Wasserman Residence. "The donation of knitted items by the “Beth El knitters” will not only warm our residents' hands, heads, and feet," said Rogers, "they will also warm their hearts. This was truly a great example of showing compassion for others."

On behalf of the residents touched by the Beth El members' thoughtfulness, we extend heartfelt thanks to the following knitters: Bea Berger, Julia Goldberg, Mara Greengrass, Heather Janssen, Sarah Kalser, Fran Rubin, and Linda Segal.
