2017 ESOL at CESLC

An outstanding initiative for staff advancement

Rodney MatthesonProviding safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to all residents is the responsibility and privilege of every person working on the campus of Charles E. Smith Life Communities. A key requirement for this to occur is the ability to communicate clearly with residents, their families, and fellow team members. Therefore, Rodney Matheson, right, our organizational development manager in Human Resources, has spearheaded a new program designed to help employees improve skills in both written and spoken English.

Since September, nine individuals have taken advantage of a unique opportunity to attend affordable on-site "English as a Second Language" classes (ESL) twice weekly at lunchtime; a second semester runs from January to April. Students spend, on average, 1.5 hours doing homework for each class they attend covering topics to which they can all relate, including:

  • Customer service
  • Current events
  • Family relationships
  • Family trees (with an emphasis on immigrant roots and family stories)

Writing assignments are selected to promote lively class discussion. For example, they include what students enjoy doing during their free time; their reasons for coming to this country; and how they would explain in a hypothetical letter to their supervisor the reasons why they are qualified for a potential promotion.

Using a textbook that features a healthcare-specific component, the instructor, Gary Musicante, invites his students to make suggestions for the curriculum.

Plans are underway to offer the ESL program over the coming summer. Please email questions to Rod Matheson or contact him at 301.770.8353.
