2016 Partnership

Charles E. Smith Life Communities' Hebrew Home Welcomes National Institutes of Health Fellows

NIH Fellow 2016 - Ann LichtensteinCharles E. Smith Life Communities (CESLC) welcomes Dr. Ann Lichtenstein, the first fellow from the National Institute of Health Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship to be part of a new partnership between CESLC and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Lichtenstein is one of two NIH fellows who will be trained by the National Institutes of Health for Hospice and Palliative Medicine for board eligibility in hospice and palliative care. The program will train two NIH fellows per year at the CESLC campus. Dr. Rachel Ombres will follow Dr. Lichtenstein and will start her rotation on our campus in mid-February, 2017.

The fellows will shadow CESLC's practitioners to develop a deep, practical understanding of the medical, psychological, and even spiritual aspects of team-based, holistic approaches to palliative medicine and hospice care.

Palliative care works alongside a patient’s regular treatment to improve their quality of life. It focuses on both physical and emotional needs to make a patient as comfortable as possible, as well as to provide support to the patient’s family.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer hands-on experience in geriatric, hospice and palliative care to these outstanding medical professionals,” said CESLC Vice President of Medical Affairs/Medical Director Elisa Gil-Pires, MD, FACP, CMD. “This partnership gives us an opportunity to expand our contribution in this field at the national level by training future experts in palliative care.”
