2016 Combatting Elder Abuse

2016 Combatting Elder Abuse

From Awareness to Action

On June 14, the ElderSAFE™ Center, directed by Tovah Kasdin, JD, proudly co-sponsored the Sixth Annual Senior Safety Forum in Recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, in Wheaton, Maryland. The event was hosted by the Office of the State’s Attorney, Montgomery County Police Department, Department of Health and Human Services, and the Fire and Rescue Service. Partner agencies included: the Ombudsman Program, Adult Protective Services, Licensure and Regulatory Services, and the Montgomery County Recreation Department. Funding was provided in part by the Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation.

Seniors, their families, caregivers, and allied professionals attended the session to learn more about senior safety, with a special focus on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Workshops emphasized the safe use of technology and how older adults can avoid financial scams and other fraudulent practices in which fraudsters often target seniors.

Liz Loewy, EverSafe General Counsel and Former Chief of the Manhattan Elder Abuse Unit, delivered the keynote address.
