2015 Horticulture Program

2015 Horticulture Program

At Ring House, Nature Spreads Roots - Indoors!

2015 Horticulture. Ann and DeborahJoy and enthusiasm were in full bloom at Ring House on Wednesday, June 17, as about a dozen residents gathered in the art room to learn about various plants and flowers and to create their own beautiful arrangements to take back to their apartments.

The class is part of a Therapeutic Horticulture program offered by Master Gardeners,  trained volunteers of the University of Maryland Agricultural Extension.

“It’s a way to make people feel happier, to have peace of mind and serenity by working with their hands and creating a pretty 2015 Horticulture Bouquetaesthetic,” explained Master Gardener Gilla Saltzman. “The participants get a lot of satisfaction out of it and I get a lot of satisfaction seeing them be happy.”

The volunteers have been working with residents at Charles E. Smith Life Communities once a month for about three years. Participants say they learn a lot from the class, and it raises their spirits.

“Today was such a wonderful day for people to see what you can do in such a short time. I love it!,” exclaimed Ring House resident Anne Gordon as she proudly showed off her handiwork.

Rose Grossman chose to go a bit risqué with her arrangement, explaining with a laugh, “I made a couple (of flowers) look like they were kissing…I think they’re absolutely gorgeous.”

CESLC residents interested in attending the Horticulture Therapy class can contact Activities Coordinator/Art Specialist Deborah Rittenhouse at 301.816.5016. No gardening experience necessary!
