2015 March Interfaith Program

Interfaith program offers clergy insights on palliative care

Rabbi James MichaelsOngoing changes in medical care are making palliative care an important option for people coping with chronic illness. On March 12, 2015, Charles E. Smith Life Communities hosted an interfaith program, Palliative Care: Essentials for All Clergy, designed for clergy of all denominations to learn more about palliative care and how to discuss the topic with parishioners.

Panelists included Dr. Elisa Gil-Pires, vice president, Medical Affairs/Medical Director, Charles E. Smith Life Communities; Simeone Frost, RN, CHPN, director of education, Jewish Social Service Agency; and Chaplain Lynn Sifrit, MDiv, BCC, from Montgomery Hospice. 2015 Spring Interfaith Program - Clergy

The discussion focused on the nature of palliative care as distinct from hospice, and on how clergy can provide meaningful pastoral support to parishioners who opt for it.

Another interfaith program for clergy is planned for fall 2015. Announcements will be made when plans are set.2015 Spring Interfaith Program - Panel

Praise for the Palliative Care Seminar:

Dear Rabbi Michaels,

Thanks very much for inviting the chaplains from the Washington Adventist Hospital to the Charles E. Smith Life Communities Palliative Care Seminar, which was really outstanding. It was very well organized and thoughtfully presented. Having a geriatric physician, social worker, and chaplain on the panel provided a very thorough look at palliative care options for elderly or chronically ill patients.

Again, thank you!

Wishing you all the best.

Faithfully,

Deacon Patrick L. Brown

Washington Jewish Week covered the event: It's not too early to talk about end-of-life decisions.
