2015 Special Menschen: The Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation

An exceptional history of philanthropic support

Elsie and Marvin DekelboumIn 2014, the prestigious Hymen Goldman Humanitarian Award was presented to the Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation. It is a well-deserved honor.
The Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation has played a transformational role in enhancing the range and quality of services that Charles E. Smith Life Communities offers to seniors in our community.
As a result of the Foundation’s lengthy history of remarkable financial support, we can point with pride to:
  • Our state-of-the-art Post-Acute Care Center, featuring cutting-edge physical, occupational and speech therapy treatments. Nearly 1,000 individuals come to the Center each year to reach their fullest potential for recovery and a safe return home.
  • Renovation of the dining room, family lounge, and patio on the second floor of the Wasserman Residence. This area offers the highest standard of comfort and innovative care for rehabilitation patients.
  • Expansion of our campus transportation program, which provides all residents a convenient and safe way to run basic errands and enjoy local cultural and recreational events, and lead engaged, fulfilling lives.
  • Acquisition of the building located at the entrance to our main campus. This allows us to expand functional space for administrative, business, and development offices and create a new Education Center to serve staff and outside individuals. It will be named the Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Building.
Marvin Dekelboum, who passed away in 2001, was a successful real estate developer. A life-long friend and business partner with Robert H. Smith, he joined six philanthropists in the 1960s, with Robert’s father Charles E. Smith at the helm, to select, acquire, and donate prime acreage in Rockville for the relocation of the Hebrew Home, Jewish Social Services Agency and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington. Both Mr. Dekelboum’s mother and mother-in-law were once residents of the Home.
Step by step, The Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Foundation continues to further our mission: to fulfill Jewish values by providing a continuum of quality services for seniors and their families, and to affirm our commitment to the dignity of each individual. Our gratitude for their commitment to our organization is immeasurable.
