Rabbi James MichaelsIn May of this year, Rabbi James Michaels was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation. He was also made a Fellow of the Foundation; this is the highest honor the Foundation can bestow on any member of the faculty. The honor was presented “in recognition of his outstanding contribution to pastoral care and late-life counseling, and in appreciation for his scholarly role as professor of Jewish studies.’’ At the presentation, it was also noted that Rabbi Michaels is co-editor, with Rabbi Cary Kozberg, of Flourishing in the Later Years: Jewish Pastoral Perspectives on Senior Residential Care (Mazo Publishers, 2012) an anthology of 24 articles, many of which were based on his experiences at Charles E. The Graduate Theological Foundation is a graduate school in Mishawaka, IN, which, as its primary mission, provides opportunities for advanced degrees for religious professionals. Each year, dozens of ministers, priests, nuns, rabbis and imams receive Master’s or Doctoral degrees from the school, following several years of intensive study. Rabbi Michaels, named the Rabbi Dr. A. Stanley Dreyfus Professor of Jewish Studies, received his Doctor of Ministry degree from GTF in 2006.
