The Province of Quebec in 1950 - Captured in Black & White

Lida Moser & MelissaThrough the lens of a camera, Hebrew Home resident Lida Moser once captured Scottish poets and authors; rural Quebec’s farmers, fishermen and their families; New York models and skyscrapers; national politicians; and authors, editors, and artists.

The Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec (Fine Arts Museum of Quebec) is now preparing an exhibition focusing on 200 photographs that Ms. Moser took in the province of Quebec in 1950. The exhibition opens February 19, 2015; a catalog will be published, in French, in conjunction with this event.

Considered one of the world’s leading photographers of her day, Ms. Moser’s images splashed across the pages of Vogue, Look, Harper’s Bazaar, and other magazines; they decorated book covers and appeared internationally in major museum exhibitions. Her articles about photography were featured in the New York Times and her books exploring photographic technique were invaluable to aspiring photographers. They're still available at www.amazon.com.

Lida Moser’s remarkable artistry spanned a 60-year period, during which she worked as a freelance photographer based in New York City. Today, her portrait, painted by American artist Alice Neel, hangs in New York’s Metropolitan Museum. Her photographic masterpieces, still widely sought, are included in permanent collections in museums and institutions in Great Britain, Canada, New York City, and locally at Washington’s Phillips and Corcoran galleries, the National Archives, and even the Library of Congress.
