2014 Special Mensch: Jeff Moss

One man impacts so many lives

Jeff Moss“It’s well documented that people whose spiritual needs are met in a health care setting tend to get better faster and have a more positive attitude,” asserts Rabbi James Michaels, director of Pastoral Care at Charles E. Smith Life Communities and co-editor of Flourishing in the Later Years: Jewish Perspectives on Long-Term Pastoral Care. Accordingly, Rabbi Michaels ensures that spiritual needs of all residents, regardless of religious background, are respected.

This is not a one-person job, stresses Rabbi Michaels. He relies upon a cadre of skilled individuals from varied religious backgrounds who, year after year, come to the campus to lend their support to residents of all faiths. Jeff Moss is part of that dedicated group.

Mr. Moss, son of a Manhattan cantor, has been active in synagogue activities most of his life. A member of a Torah-reading corps in his youth, he has been leading religious services since his days as the Ritual vice president in United Synagogue Youth. Upon learning in 1986 that the Hebrew Home was looking for someone to help conduct High Holiday services, he jumped at the opportunity. “I always wanted to lead High Holiday services,” he shares. He signed on, and 29 years later, Mr. Moss, now 64 and a senior computer programmer for GEICO, still serves as cantor at the Home — not only for High Holidays but also for Shabbat, Jewish festivals, and Passover Seders.

For someone whose life pulses with the rhythms of Jewish observance (a member of B’nai Israel, he’s past regional president and the 2013 Ma’asim Tovim award recipient of the Seaboard Region of the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs), Mr. Moss’s involvement with our campus continues to provide personal satisfaction. “I enjoy helping residents, getting to know them, hearing about their lives, and, in many cases, watching them grow Jewishly.”
