Ron Watts & Tony Kornheiser

Two "Greats" Meet at 2013 Evening Event

Ronny Watts, Tony KornheiserFamous sports writer, commentator and TV talk show host Tony Kornheiser recently had the pleasure of shaking hands with former star athlete Ron Watts, who once reached the heights playing with the Boston Celtics in the 1960s, when the team dominated NBA basketball. Mr. Watts is currently undergoing rehabilitation therapy at the Hebrew Home. The occasion for the handshake came at our special evening event at Woodmont Country Club, where Mr. Kornheiser, as featured speaker, entertained guests with inside stories from the world of sports. For these two remarkable men, however, it was not a first encounter.

Years ago, Mr. Kornheiser was inducted into the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington's "Jewish Sports Hall of Fame." At the preceding Dinner of Champions, he had the honor of meeting Mr. Watts, whose stunning basketball career was capped by his own induction, two years earlier, into the same Hall of Fame. They chatted about highlights from Mr. Watts' career and shared recollections about the Clio Award-winning Ron Watts and Bill Russell Adlib AT&T Commercial.

This time, when Mr. Kornheiser walked over to say hello to Mr. Watts, they exchanged news about top sports figures whom they both know and Mr. Watts' continued friendship with his old teammate Bill Russell. They also enjoyed discussing ESPN's Sports Century Retrospective, which "reviews the people and athletic events that defined sports in North America throughout the 20th and 21st centuries." For the record, Bill Russell is #18 on the list.

"Tony is very entertaining," says Mr. Watts with enthusiasm, adding how delighted he was to see him once again.
