Student Volunteer Moved by Experiences at the Hebrew Home

My First Day

 My First Day

My first day volunteering at the Hebrew home was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. During our brief meeting before I began, your advice, guidance and kindness made me feel very warm and welcome and part of the Hebrew Home family. I volunteered on the second and third floors and was frequently greeted by staff with most sincere appreciation and care for the residents.

I started my volunteer work, on the second floor. After chatting with a few residents, I met a resident who really made my day special. She was in search of a book and had a passion for fashion and business. As I too, love fashion and plan on studying business in college, we were able to talk about the latest trends and the stock market. Afterwards, I found a book to her liking in the Conservatory and when I brought it back to her, she gave me a huge smile and said, "bless your heart". Interestingly, in the elevator ride back up, I met another resident. We both introduced each other and though he knew little about me, he told me that I have a "nice name for a nice girl". This made me really smile and feel very humbled to be volunteering in such a friendly environment. Another highlight from the day, was meeting a resident whose granddaughter has the same name as me. This resident shared with me, all about her granddaughter's accomplishments and said that I inspired her to reconnect with her granddaughter via letters and phone calls. I also met a resident who has had a challenging life but is now finally content and comfortable. We discussed her most meaningful life lesson, being happy with yourself. When she shared with me that she has very few friends, I told her that she has another friend named Chelsey the volunteer.

My first day volunteering at the Hebrew Home was a day that I will never forget. I feel as though, heaven must have spent a little extra time on this senior citizen home as when I, Chelsey the volunteer, walked around, I saw such inspirational and magnificent people of all ages. Thank you so much for enabling me to be a part of the Hebrew Home mission and I look forward to coming again many more times in the future.
