Meet Lucille:
"It's been a good life"

When talking with Lucille Cohen, her joy in her family and friends comes shining through.

Lucille has lived at the Hebrew Home since September 2008, and she enjoys the good and attentive service she receives, the close friendships she had made here, and the activities in which she takes part.

Lucille was born in Brooklyn, New York, in the Williamsburg section of the borough, and has lived in Queens as well. She was an only child. Her mother was born on Long Island; her father was from Europe and worked as a mattress maker in New York. Her grandparents had originally come from Lithuania

In New York, she married Sammy, who worked as a brakeman for the city's Department of Sanitation. Lucille worked in sales, specializing in selling curtains and drapes for Abraham & Strauss (A & S), a well-known department store in New York City. The couple moved to Del Ray Beach in 1975, bought a home, and lived in Florida for more than 30 years. There, Sammy worked as an auto mechanic and also flipped burgers at Burger King while Lucille worked part-time in sales. Her beloved Sammy passed away 10 years ago.

Lucille still has close friends in Florida―Mitzi, Estie, and Dottie―who live in the King's Point development, and she keeps in regular contact with them.

Lucille and Sammy had two daughters, Carole and Debbie. Carole, the oldest daughter, settled in New York with her husband Jordon, and daughter Felicia. Debbie lives closer, in Reading, Virginia, with her husband Mark. One grandchild, Jaimi, is a Long Island school teacher, and grandson Brian and his wife Kelly have given Lucille a lovely great grandson named Mason.

Since her arrival at the Hebrew Home, Lucille has become close friends with Lois and Bob. She thoroughly enjoys spending time with them, playing bingo, welcoming guests at the front door, and enjoying the musical functions in the social hall. Lois has become a great friend, giving Lucille advice and being a bingo partner. Lucille also plays a mean game of poker. So watch out!

Lucille looks back on a good life. As an only child, she now treasures the family she has. She celebrated her 89th birthday this past April at the Hebrew Home. We wish Lucille many, many more.
